Making a mesh wreath isn’t as hard as you think! I always used to see these gorgeous wreaths at craft fairs and on Etsy and think they were so amazing I’d never be able to make them.

I was so wrong! The technique is actually very simple and you can do it just as easily as I can!

I’ve made a lot of wreaths and have posted several tutorials on my blog like my American Flag Mesh Wreath, my Leprechaun Hat Mesh Wreath, my Easter Deco Mesh Wreath and will be posting more soon too!

How do you make this DIY Patriotic Deco Mesh Wreath?

Step 1: Gather your supplies.

You will need:

  • Red White and Blue Assorted 10″ Deco Mesh
  • 12″ Wreath Frame (You can use bigger or smaller I just prefer this size)
  • 2″-3″ Wired Patriotic Ribbon
  • Patriotic Sign (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Cutting Mat
  • Scissors
  • Accent Pieces (optional)
  • Embroidered Stars
  • Hot Glue Gun

This is the accent ribbon I used. 2″-3″ size works best. Make sure it’s wired!

This is the deco mesh. I use the 10″. Some people prefer 8″ or 6″, but I like using the 10″. Play around with a few wreaths and then decide. I do find this is a pretty easy size to get at stores.

Step 2: Prep your wreath form.

You can buy wreath forms that already have the wire attached, but it’s just as easy to make your own too.

Simply twist on a pipe cleaner every few inches around the wreath, alternating between the top row and the bottom row as shown.

Pro Tip: Use a pipe cleaner color that matches your wreath. You will trim it, but may still see some of the pipe cleaner once the wreath is complete.

Step 3: Attach the mesh to the wreath.

You do not need to cut the deco mesh before doing this style of mesh wreath. Attach one end of the mesh, as shown, to the wreath using the pipe cleaner to just twist around it.

Then just continue around the wreath, leaving a little space in the mesh so that it’s puffy, and then connect to the next pipe cleaner.

Pro Tip: Keep your mesh “bumps” about the same height as your go around the wreath for the most finished look.

Once you make it all the way around, connect it to the same pipe cleaner you started with and then use scissors to snip the mesh.

This is what mine looked like after one go around. Not very pretty, but keep going!

Start at a different pipe cleaner, and do the same with the red deco mesh.

Be mindful of natural gaps and try to fill them with the mesh as you go around to keep it more full.

I did a third layer of deco mesh, but used a red and blue striped deco mesh this time. You can use plain white, or a patriotic blend and achieve a similar, full and festive look for your DIY Patriotic Deco Mesh Wreath.

Now that the mesh portion is finished, we’re going to add some decorative ribbon!

Step 4: Cut and add the patriotic ribbon.

I used a rotary cutter to cut my ribbon, because it’s faster. If you use a rotary cutter, you should cut with it on a rubber cutting mat like the one shown.

You can also measure a 10″ strip and then cut several more to that length using scissors instead.

Cut your ribbon pieces to be about 10″-11″ long.

Then use a pair of scissors and cut a “v” shape in each end.

Pinch your ribbon in the center like this, with the design on the ribbon facing up, and then twist it onto the pipe cleaner like you did the deco mesh.

I put two ribbon pieces on each pipe cleaner and liked the way it came out.

I’ll show you below how I added the curly decorative picks to the wreath too!

Step 5: Add the curly decorative picks.

I found these in the patriotic section at Hobby Lobby but you could use Christmas ones too.

I peeled off one curly at a time, and twisted them onto the wire wreath form to make them stick out at the edges.

They’re made of wire, so you can bend and move them once they’re on the wreath to get your desired look.

Step 6: Attach the sign to your wreath.

Attaching a sign to your DIY Patriotic Deco Mesh Wreath is simple! I found this one at Hobby Lobby.

I removed the twine hanger from the back, and then used the existing holes to attach it to the sign with pipe cleaners.

If your sign does not have existing holes, you can use a drill to make them if it’s a wooden sign, or a metal punch if it’s metal.

Step 7: Attach the stars.

I found these cute embroidered stars on Amazon, and also used them on my American Flag Mesh Wreath. I used them to put right in the center of the twist of the pipe cleaners.

This helped cover the pipe cleaners, and added a little detail to the wreath itself.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the stars.

When your DIY Patriotic Deco Mesh Wreath is finished, this is what it will look like! It’s strong and durable enough for outside use, or it pretty enough to display indoors as well!
