Succulents have definitely made a come back lately, and I’m in LOVE with how these patriotic succulent planters turned out! These are CRAZY easy to make, but look great sitting just about anywhere.
How do you make these patriotic succulent planters?
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
You will need:
- Mason Jars
- Paintbrushes
- Red, White, and Blue Acrylic Paint
- Star Stencils (optional)
- Antiquing Wax or Clear Spray Paint (to seal)
- Succulent Dirt
- Finishing Gravel
- Succulents of Choice
Step 2: Paint one jar white.
Put one jar upside down, and paint it with a solid coat of white. With the light color, you’ll see some brush strokes.
If you don’t want a rustic look like I did, you can let it dry all the way and give it a second coat of paint.
The second jar you will paint blue. I painted mine with a darker blue, and you couldn’t see through the jar with just a single coat.
Step 3: Add the stripes and stars.
Once the jars are dry, then you’re ready to add the stars and stripes. I used red paint to freehand some stripes onto my white jar.
To make the stars, I used white paint. I alternated between using stencils and freehanding the stars to mix it up. They’re super cute!
Step 4: Seal the paint.
With these patriotic succulent planters being painted with acrylic paint, they need to be sealed to keep the paint from just washing off. I used American Paint Company’s Vintage Antiquing Wax, but you could also use clear spray paint.
If you use the wax, paint on a thin coat and let it cure for 24 hours.
Step 5: Add in the soil.
Succulents need a special kind of soil to grow well and flourish. I always finish mine with small gravel on top as well too.
Step 6: Add the succulents.
Succulents come in ALL types of shapes and sizes. Pick some you love, and put them in your cute DIY patriotic succulent planters!
Pro Tip: Succulents need good drainage. So while these planters are cute temporary decor, they will not be a good permanent place for your succulents to stay. Once the season is over, transplant them to a container with good drainage for best growing results.
