We take our kids JUST about everywhere we go. Sometimes we get to escape kid-free, but most of the time it’s one giant family adventure. If your kids are anything like mine, they want a snack about every 16 seconds when they’re in the car. I don’t want a ton of trash in my car, nor do I want to dig through a giant snack bag to find something they feel like eating. Check out these travel hacks for kid’s snacks in the car!

7 Travel Hacks for Kid’s Snacks in the Car
Egg Cartons
We really like re-using things. The less trash my car can amass while we’re traveling, the better. Yes, you can buy individual packs of snacks kids love, but that just ends up creating more package trash and half-eaten snacks that spoil. This handy little hack of using an egg carton to make an adorable little snack buffet works for every kid. They’re totally customizable for what each kid wants. Both of our kids love Goldfish crackers, so they’re always included. We’re not a fan of a bunch of sugar-loaded snacks, so it’s nice to give them fun-colored Goldfish Colors, which I know are made with colors sourced from plants – which is awesome!
Re-Usable Cloth Bags
We have some super cute little cloth bags that have a draw string so the kids can open and close them easily. They hold JUST a handful of a snack so it’s plenty for a kid’s portion. No trash from these little guys either, and they fit nicely in a diaper bag or backpack if you need to take a snack in with you at a stop. I made ours, but you can find similar ones on Amazon HERE.
Paper Cups
We also take cute little paper cups (they come in a package of ten for $1.00 in the party section at Walmart) and cover them with saran wrap, tinfoil or something similar. You can write names on the cup, or give each kid their color. Write the name of the snack on the outside. These keep well in the car, and you can re-use the cups over and over again.
Frosting Lid Hack
You know those cute little cups they sell at Walmart with characters on them? My cabinet is full of them, and I’m not really even sure where they came from. Turns out a LOT of parents have them, so you might too. Did you know a frosting lid fits right on the top? Snaps right on. Stop throwing away those frosting lids and keep them for holding kid’s snacks in the car.
Snack Baggies
So these won’t eliminate trash from your car as much, BUT they will save you money. My kids go through Goldfish crackers pretty quickly. We buy the big cartons of Goldfish Colors at Walmart and then I split them up into appropriate portion sizes in little baggies. This is great for snacking at home and for kid’s snacks in the car.
Mini Mason Jars
I know a lot of people who use glass containers for everything. I don’t trust my kids with glass very often, but mini mason jars are pretty tough. They’re easy to haul, they seal up tight, and you can easily label them for what’s inside or for which kid they belong to. We have a TON of mason jars in every shape and size so this works well for us.
Mini Tupperware Containers
If glass isn’t your thing, you can also use mini tupperware containers that are plastic. Their lids snap on tightly, and they hold a small portion size. These create zero trash in the car and are easy to clean and re-use, you know barring you can find the lid before you go.
