The Best White Gravy Recipe
This milk gravy recipe is thick, delicious, and peppery and everything that’s good about gravy! I love this white gravy recipe on biscuits, eggs, and especially on my traditional mashed potatoes recipe!
The best thing about this recipe is that the whole thing comes together in five minutes. I’m not kidding. Five minute gravy.
Why wouldn’t you make this?! This is the gravy I use in my Homemade Mashed Potato Bowls and it makes the whole recipe creamy and delicious!
Besides it being so quick to make and so delicious, it’s also really cheap to make. Buying gravy mixes is a waste of money, and totally unnecessary!
Once you make this recipe, you’ll know how simple it is to make! This white gravy recipe is so good…I’m thinking breakfast for dinner tonight. What will you put it on?
What makes your gravy recipe so special?
I’m from Southern Missouri. I’ve been eating gravy since I was old enough to have solid foods. My Mama, grandma, and every neighbor lady I knew made this and served it to my sisters and I growing up so much, that I’m pretty sure my blood type is mostly white gravy.
Where I’m from, biscuits and gravy is something to be celebrated and looked forward to! I’m convinced that this white gravy would make a flip flop taste good if it needed to.
If you’re gonna make gravy, make a recipe written by someone from the South like me who’s been eating it for as long as they’ve been alive.
How Do You Make White Gravy From Scratch?
Making white gravy from scratch is actually a surprisingly simple task! You’re just 4 simple ingredients and 5 minutes away from perfect milk gravy!
- In a saucepan, melt the butter completely on a medium/high heat.
- Once it’s melted fully, sprinkle the flour over it, and stir it together. It will make a thick, crumbly paste in the pan (almost like a soft cookie dough) and that’s good.
- Next, add in your two cups of milk and pepper to the mixture.
- Use a whisk and continuously and vigorously whisk the mixture to remove any lumps.
- The gravy will start to bubble.
- Keep stirring until it reaches a thicker consistency (like thin pudding) and then remove it from the heat.
- The longer it sits off the heat, the thicker it will get.
- Serve warm.
What is white gravy made of?
White gravy is typically made from a fatty base (meat grease, butter, or oil), flour, milk, and salt and pepper to taste. The taste will vary depending on the fatty medium used.
The most ideal and flavorful way is to make it with meat grease as the base. In a pinch, I have often made it with butter or oil and have enjoyed it all the same.
What is sausage gravy made of?
Sausage gravy is typically white gravy made with sausage grease as the base of the recipe, with the crumbled sausage mixed into the gravy as well. Pork sausage is best, because it has the highest fat content typically, but you can also use ground chicken, turkey, or beef sausage as well.
Why is American gravy white?
While there are many many gravies that are considered “American”, I think the most notable is the common white gravy recipe. It’s most popular in the South, and is eaten often over mashed potatoes, fried meats, and biscuits.
The gravy stays white because of the milk and flour base used to make the recipe. The more meat grease involved in making it, the more the white gravy recipe will have a slight brownish or yellowish tint to it.
