I’m a BIG fan of making special clothes or accessories for my girls for holidays, and we ALWAYS wear themed clothing on holidays. This year we decided to make our own Hand Print American Flag Shirts and I’m in LOVE with how they turned out!
My nearly 10 year-old was convinced she was gonna hate the shirt, until she made and now she thinks it’s adorable. So…pre-teen approved!
How do you make these hand print American flag shirts?
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
You will need:
- Red Fabric Paint
- Blue Fabric Paint
- Flat Paintbrush
- White T-shirt
Step 2: Paint the hand blue.
Next, you will need to suppress every inkling of, “don’t do this” and paint your kid’s hand blue. Remember, this needs to be the LEFT hand!
Paint it liberally to make sure the hand is nice and covered so it leaves a solid handprint on the shirt.
Pro Tip: You absolutely NEED to use fabric paint for this. Acrylic paint will wash off. You can find the brand I used easily at Walmart for like $1.50 a bottle, or you can find it on Amazon here.
Step 3: Press the hand to the shirt.
Line up your kid’s hand on the top left of the front of the shirt, and carefully press their hand down. I was repeatedly saying to my kids, “Don’t move, don’t wiggle, just let Mommy press it down.”
It worked. They both pressed their hands straight down, and then let me press on the tops of their fingers to make a nice handprint.
Pro Tip: Before doing this, place a piece of cardboard, or an old notebook or something inside the shirt to keep the paint from bleeding through. Ask me how I know.
Step 4: Paint on the stripes.
Using red fabric paint and a flat paintbrush, make stripes next to the handprint. I did less stripes for my 4 year-old’s shirt, and more stripes for my pre-teen’s shirt. They both turned out cute!
No need to tape, just start closest to the hand, and slide the paintbrush across the shirt. Naturally let the paint run out to create a faded look to the end of the stripes.
Let the paint dry for about 30 minutes, to ensure it’s totally dry before letting your child wear it. Wash and dry like normal!
I found our white t-shirts at Walmart, but you can get them from wherever. Tank tops would also be cute for these Hand Print American Flag Shirts!
