If you’re throwing a Minecraft Birthday Party sometime soon, you’re going to want this DIY Minecraft Creeper Pinata! It’s super simple to make, and will cost you less than $5!

Recently my daughter wanted a Minecraft birthday and we had a BLAST creating it together! I made a ton of free printables etc (you can see all the pics and ideas here) for decor, and all kinds of fun snacks.
I usually buy pinatas for my birthday party themes, but all the Minecraft ones I found were either lacking in pizzaz or were crazy over-priced! So I decided to make this Creeper Pinata instead – and it was SO easy and turned out awesome!
How do you make a Minecraft Creeper Pinata?
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
You will need:
- Green Crepe Paper Streamers (you can get these at Amazon using my link, or you can find them in the party aisle at Walmart for cheap.)
- Medium-Sized Square Box (got mine from Walmart, you can see the exact one below.)
- Scissors
- Roller Adhesive (this is ESSENTIAL and will save you crazy amounts of time! I used about 5 of these to make my Creeper Pinata.)
- Green Acrylic Paint
- Foam Paintbrushes
- Packing Tape (Brown Paper tape is best, but clear will work if it’s all you have)
- Small Binder Clips
- Black Construction Paper
- Large Zip Tie or Rope
- Candy
I found this box for less than a dollar in the Walmart packing department. It’s not perfectly square, but wasn’t noticeable once the Creeper Pinata was made.
Step 2: Fill and seal your box.
Before you begin assembling your Minecraft Creeper Pinata, you will need to add your pinata hanger, fill your box with candy, and seal it shut.
Seal the top of your box, pierce 2 holes on either side of the seam in the middle, and then insert a large zip tie or a medium rope to use as the hanger. Don’t skip this step, or you’ll kick yourself later for how difficult it will be. Ask me how I know.
Tape your box together using packing tape. Brown paper packing tape works best for this, as the paint sticks to it much better.
You can use regular plastic packing tape if it’s what you have on hand, but know that the paint won’t stick to it well.
This is about 2 lbs of candy and favors, so while it doesn’t look like a lot, it is!
Step 3: Paint your box.
I used cheap green acrylic paint to paint a single layer of paint on the box. This will make sure if there are any gaps in the paper streamers, you’ll see green instead of a plain box.
Pro Tip: Keep your paint thin as your paint, and it will dry quickly.
Step 4: Let the paint dry.
Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step. This should only take about 10-15 minutes if you did a thin coat like I suggested.
Step 5: Cut the streamers.
I came up with a hack to make this a thousand times faster than doing this one at a time.
Cut your green streamer paper into strips that are about two inches longer than the front of the box. Cut about 20 strips at a time to cut at once.
Use small binder clips to hold them together on the ends so all your cute end up in the same place for the fringe.
Make cuts that go almost to the top of the paper (leave about 1/2″ of clearance so you have room to adhere them to your box) about every 1/4″. For reference see the picture below.
Step 6: Attach the fringe to your Creeper Pinata.
One strip at a time, use your double sided-roller adhesive (this stuff is MAGIC) and roll it along the back of the strip. You will ONLY need one strip of adhesive on the section that isn’t cut. I used 4-5 of these rolls for the whole Creeper pinata.
Use your fingers to press it onto the box, lining the first strip up with the bottom of the box.
Let the fringe wrap around the corners just a bit. This will make sure you don’t have any gaps and that it looks nice when it’s finished.
Step 7: Make your layers.
Layer each strip on top of the next, letting them overlap just enough so there aren’t any gaps.
Step 8: Repeat to complete.
You will do this all the way to the top for all four sides of the box. THEN you will do the top of the box.
Step 9: Add the face and hanger.
Use black construction paper to cut out:
- (2) square eyes
- (1) long rectangle nose
- (1) large rectangle for the mouth
- (2) small squares for the bottom of the mouth
Use the adhesive roller to attach these to the front when the pinata is completely covered in green fringe.
That’s all it takes to make your own DIY Minecraft Creeper Pinata! It seems like a lot of work, but it’s really not! It goes together quickly and was a HIT at our party!
