Recently I was in Hobby Lobby and was browsing the ornaments looking for some more ornaments for my tree’s theme this year and I found a super fun Pom Pom Ornament made from thick, puffy yarn, and I knew it would fit perfectly with my theme this year! The problem was it was like $8 for a single Pom Pom Ornament made from yarn.
So, I decided to make my own Pom Pom Ornament. Since I was doing it for my tree this year, I figured I’d share how I did it with you so you could save yourself some moolah too! It takes two minutes!

Pom Pom Ornament DIY
You will need:
Thick, fluffy yarn in the color of your choice
Thin ribbon or twine (optional)
Cardboard
Scissors
First you will need to get a piece of cardboard as big or bigger than the size you want your Pom Pom Ornament to be.
Trace an item like a bowl or cup that has the size of circle you want your Pom Pom Ornament to be. Then draw a smaller circle on the inside.
For as thick as the yarn I used is, I should have cut a bigger circle in the middle for ease of removing the Pom Pom Ornament when it was done. Keep that in mind when you’re making your Pom Pom Ornament template.
Use scissors to cut out the circle like I showed in the picture above.
Wrap your Pom Pom Ornament template in fat, fluffy yarn. The more yarn you wrap, the more full your Pom Pom Ornament would be.
I like to wrap just as much yarn as I can keep on the Pom Pom Ornament template so my pom pom is nice and fluffy. Wrap it tight to fit more on the cardboard template.
Once you have it wrapped, cut the yarn. Then cut a piece of yarn that’s about 8″ long. Wrap that through the hole in the template, and around the yarn, and tie it as tight as you possibly can.
Use a sharp pair of scissors (and by sharp, I mean the ones you can find, because my scissors always disappear in my house) and cut directly down the center of the edge of the circle as shown.
I chose to use a thin ribbon (1/8″ thick) as my ornament hanger. Cut the ribbon about a half inch longer than you want your hanger to be.
Slip the ribbon through the tied piece of yarn in the center of the pom pom. I pulled the knot on my ornament hanger to the center of the ornament so the knot wasn’t showing up when I placed the ornament on my tree.
You can re-use your Pom Pom Ornament cardboard template over and over again to make as many Pom Pom Ornaments as you want for your tree. These would also be great to sell at a craft show, or to make different sizes of for your tree!
Whatever you decide to do with your Pom Pom Ornament, you’ll be happy to know they take less than 5 minutes a piece to make. Happy crafting!
