Everywhere I look I see boutiques selling Leather Earrings. They come in all kinds of prints and shapes and they’re all the rage across my Facebook newsfeed. They’re lightweight and can be done in so many shapes and colors or patterns that they appeal to a large group of people.
These Leather Earrings would be perfect to give as gifts, or to sell at craft fairs or online in a store like Etsy. If you want to just make custom ones for yourself, you can do that and save a bunch of money too! I’m going to show you how to DIY these Leather Earrings and give you all my best tips for how to find supplies and more.

Where do you get leather?
The easiest place for me to find it was my local leather shop. If you have a decent sized city near you, you likely have a leather shop. My leather shop sells little bags of scrap leather in different colors for $1.99 a bag. I find this bag does like 20 pairs of earrings for me, so it’s a pretty affordable way to get the leather. Alternatively, you can buy this pack of 2lbs of leather scraps from Amazon. It’s free shipping for Prime members and 2 lbs will last you a VERY long time.
Do I need a leather punch?
Yes. You absolutely need the leather punch. Mine comes in super handy and it makes clean holes every time. Not to mention they’re cheap on Amazon.
How do I make the shape I want?
So my biggest thing is not getting the shape I want, but cutting it out the same for two earrings to make a matching pair. The easiest way to do this is to draw the shape you want on a piece of paper, cut that piece out, and then use that as your template to cut your leather pieces out.
After you cut your leather pieces out, you’re going to use your leather punch to make a hole at the top of the earring to play your earring post through. I use the smallest hole on my leather punch for this. After this, it’s super simple to just put your jump ring in (jump ring is a fancy term for a silver circle that split in the middle so you can bend it open to attach it to things). Bend it open, and put it through the hole you punched in the leather.
After you put the jump ring in, leave it split open, and slip the earring post on. Then use your pliers to close the jump ring. This should take you just a few seconds. If it doesn’t the first couple of times, you’ll get used to it and you’ll get faster with time.
They really are simple to make. It will take you longer to cut the leather out (I just use a sharp pair of scissors) than it will to put the earrings together. Change the size or shape to match your personal style, or the style of the person you’re making them for. If you’re making them to sell, make all kinds of sizes shapes and colors!

Otherwise, you’ll be able to see the big drop of oil for a few hours on your earrings.
