If you have dogs, you know that when they get bored, like kids, bad things happen. For example, my dogs have chewed on my wooden rocking chair, the stairs to my deck, and have eaten a brand new soccer ball this Summer and it’s only the beginning of June. Bones only keep them busy for so long, and can get expensive. I needed more ammo, so we made this Dog Summer Boredom Buster. IT. IS. AWESOME.
This kept both of my large dogs busy for well over an hour, and tired them out so they napped for a long while after as well. This Dog Summer Boredom Buster will not only keep your dogs busy in a good way, but will also help them beat the heat this summer, and help keep them hydrated. You can make this SO easily.
You will need:
Large stainless steel bowl
Water
Dog safe food/treats (we used peanut butter, hot dogs, baby carrots, peanuts, chew sticks etc…If your dog likes it, and it can be submerged in water until it’s frozen, then you can use it in the Dog Summer Boredom Buster)
The best way to make this is by freezing stuff in layers. Otherwise all your stuff will just go to the bottom. And while this works great for pictures on your blog post, your dogs will enjoy it for longer if you freeze stuff in layers. Fill your stainless steel bowl about a third of the way up with water. Add 7-10 food items to the water (for peanut butter, use a natural peanut butter and just a small spoon to make dollops). Put it in the deep freeze (or just in your fridge freezer if you have enough room for it to sit flat) on a level surface, and allow it to freeze for 3-4 hours.
After the time is up, remove it, add more cold water (another third) and more treat items. Repeat the freezing process and the adding things and water process a third time. So you should have three layers of stuff to keep them busy through the whole Dog Summer Boredom Buster. If you set it in the shade, it will help keep your dogs cool, and help it not to melt as fast. If you have no choice but to put it in the sun, be prepared that it will melt much quicker in the summer heat.
